Behavior of rock foundations of dams and reservoir slopes; banks of submerged valleys are subjected to seasonal deformations due to fluctuations of phreatic layers' level swollen by periodic rise of water surface; this weakens rock structure; weight causes subsidence in thalwegs (often accompanied by local seismic activity) and up-stream tilting of dam; irreversible movements of foundations destroy tightness of rock base and reduce load bearing capacity; stresses resulting in permanent deformations of foundation rock can therefore start progressive rupturing process.
