Malpasset dam; review of circumstances of total accident in 1959; site geology as well as dam design and behavior in operation are described; search for failure causes included study of dam ruins and marks in terrain, as well as experimental and theoretical investigation of rock foundation and its properties (permeability, crack formation, other mechanical properties); study revealed important effect of interstitial water pressure which can be counteracted by properly designed foundation drainage systems; to prevent failures, magnitude of this pressure should be constantly watched by means of registering piezometers installed in dam abutment.
