Seismic failures of chilean tailings dams
Observation, after earthquake in Chile, of 22 dams, 11 of which were badly cracked or failed; almost all failed dams were constructed on low permeability soils by hydraulic-fill method, with central ponds usually few meters from borders and with uncompacted sandy shells with exterior slopes of about 35°; typical failure was produced during or immediately after quake, and included slope slide, and flow of liquefied core; behavior of each dam is described, and core and shell sampling information is given; it is concluded that tailings dams of this kind are seismically unstable, and some recommendations are given.
