Effect of size and shape of test specimens on direct tensile strength of concrete
Two different grades of concrete were tested with river pebbles and with granulated aggregates, and no essential difference was found in curve of percentual increase of tensile strength of concrete in dependence on size and shape of test specimens; it is shown that from generally established curve of percentual increase of direct tensile strength of concrete in dependence on decreasing volume of test specimens it is possible to ascertain strength of specimens of basic dimensions if maximum grain size of aggregates does not exceed 1/3 of smallest dimension of test specimen, and if its slenderness corresponds to certain ratio for cylinders and prisms.
