Corrosion of steel in continuously submerged reinforced concrete piling
Steel corrosion in portions of piling which were continuously submerged for period of approximately 37 yr in seawater is examined; samples of concrete were obtained so as to determine contained salt content; under continuously submerged conditions it was found that 8 out of 17 of pilings had heavy corrosion of steel; metal loss of heavily corroded sections of steel was in character of irregular-shaped, broad pits; average of maximum pit depths was 0.114 in. for pits having lengths up to approximately 6 in.; chloride content found in continuously submerged concrete ranged between 13 and 34 lb/cu yd, averaged 25 lb/cu yd.
