Deterioration of concrete in Eisenhower Lock
Concrete in Eisenhower Lock on St. Lawrence Seaway has deteriorated around filling-and-emptying ports; causes of deterioration are discussed; cracks were developed at upper outside corner of big culverts through walls of both locks; they are ascribed tentatively to greater pressure from backfill than was anticipated, which unreinforced concrete could not resist in tension; problem is being corrected with post tensioning tendons parallel to sloping back wall, anchored into good concrete.
