Use of small flame tunnel for evaluating fire hazard
Tunnel is calibrated by determining maximum flame advance along surface of preconditioned red oak and asbestos cement board prior to evaluation of test panels; flame spread ratings can be calculated from relative degree of flame advance on test panels (as compared to standard materials); these ratings allow prediction of results which will be obtained in 25 ft tunnel of ASTM Method E84-61; consumption of panel, specimen temperature, char depth and volume, and degree and quality of intumescence (when evaluating such system) are also easily obtained.
