Role of microbiological agencies in deterioration of stone
Biology is undoubtedly pertinent in explaining manifestations of weathering and decay of stone in buildings and in nature; it is probable that sulfur-oxidizing organisms in country districts play important part in causing scaling of surfaces of building stone; deterioration is never consequence of single cause; even where deterioration appears to be purely physical, like honeycombing by wind erosion, or purely chemical, like formation of "mondmilch", microorganisms can accentuate effects; this should not be overlooked when procedures for treatment and conservation of materials in buildings are considered.
