Brittle fracture in concrete and rocks
Researches into fracture in concrete and rocks are described; general theory of strength of brittle materials, based on concept that brittle bodies contain multitude of crack-like flaws, is outlined and used to describe observed fracture behavior of concrete and rocks; attention is drawn to relation between size of structure and probable stress at fracture; implications of brittle fracture concepts are discussed in relation to design of mass concrete structures, including arch dams, and importance of fracture control measures is emphasized.
