Permanent beauty for bridge assured by weathering steels
Corrosion-resistant steel was used as permanent forms for tall concrete piers to support continuous girder spans of 260-330-260 ft flanked by 100-ft simple spans, also of weathering steel, on highway 1-26 south of Asheville, NC; piers are tapered; forms were fabricated from Mayari R steel 5/16 in. thick; 1/8 in. of steel was computed as reinforcement for enclosed concrete, reducing bars required; girders are Cor Ten steel; they were erected in large units by cableway spanning 1120 ft between abutments and capable of transporting up to 50 tons.
