Irwell valley bridge on M62
Launching of seven 200 ft long steel box girders used in construction of bridge is described; bridge has 200 ft long single skew span of steel box-girder construction, supporting reinforced concrete deck slab; it will carry eight lanes of traffic and slip road at height of 70 ft above normal river level; girders, delivered in 50 ft lengths, welded on site into 200 ft spans; before being launched into position across fast-flowing river, two 200 ft long girders were joined together end to end, rear beam acting as counterbalance during launching.
