Drawbridge layout reduces structure to separate large components and each is built up in form of closed boxes from prefabricated parts; all parts of superstructure are fabricated from steel to British Standard 2762 and welded throughout; bridge provides 25 ft double land roadway of unrestricted loading with two 7 ft 6 in. footpaths; road surface on main span is curved in elevation to form vertical curve between approach gradients; machinery for operating bridge span and auxiliary mechanisms is of unusual design, and consists of self-contained oil hydraulic pump/motor system; arrangement makes it possible to control output of main pumps by cam mounted on trunnion so that angular speed of span is always related to its inclination.
