Grid moment maximization by mathematical programming
Plane grid representation of highway bridge is analyzed for maximum moment under moving load using influence surface method; grid is acted upon by simple H20 loading; sum of products of wheel loads and ordinates of influence surface at their locations defines objective function, which is function of position of truck on bridge; mathematical programming procedure determines that position which causes objective function to take on its maximum; computer program automates optimization; this program may be adapted to more general conditions, such as skew bridge and multiple trucks, with or without variable axle spacing.
