Ultimate strength of beams with rectangular holes
Experimental and analytical investigation of behavior and ultimate strength of wide-flange beams having unreinforced rectangular web holes; four 10-ft long 16WF36 simply supported beams were tested with one or two concentrated loads; results showed that as load on beam with web hole increases, first yielding in beam in vicinity of hole occurs at corners of hole as result of stress concentration at corner; ultimate load can be predicted by lower-bound solution in which strain hardening is neglected; allowable design loads indicate that plastic-design analysis gives greater allowable load.
