Mechanisms of shear resistance of concrete beams
Nature of shear resistance of reinforced concrete beams is examined, and it is shown that shear may be resisted by beam and arch actions; at diagonal cracking load of shear span, beam action breaks down; unless beam contains prestressed reinforcement arch action cannot develop to appreciable extent prior to diagonal cracking; it is shown that strength of beam action depends largely on mechanism of shear transfer across crack by interlocking of aggregate particles, and to lesser extent by dowel action of reinforcement.
