Many of dangers accompanying building of large engineering structures are of geological origin and it is one of chief responsibilities of geologist to point this out in time to avoid accident; commonest danger is from falling rock in excavations, such as those for foundations in the open, from roof in rock tunnels, and from caving or running ground charged with water and mud; dam foundations; various other points discussed.
