Saving reinforcing steel by rationalizing safety factors
New design method proposed as means to save steel in concrete construction; it involves increasing unit stresses, but by indirect procedure of using reduced dead load for design purposes; in effect it reduces safety factor for dead load while leaving live load factor unchanged; method requires no changes in building codes nor revision of handbook design data. (See also Eng News-Rec v 128 n 19, 23 and 25 May 7 1942 p 785-7 and (discussions) June 4 p 900-1, June 18 p 972 and v 129 n 1 July 2 1942 p 9)
