Paper deals with problem of philosophy behind working stresses for timber structures; in particular, it contains proposals for new, Canadian approach to problem to form basis for determination of safe, but more economical values of working stresses; reduction factors for duration of loading, moisture content, type of structure, and grade of lumber are discussed; effect of full scale tests on reduction factors.
