Finite element analysis of plywood plates
Finite element analysis for plate bending developed by R.J.Melosh (see Engineering Index 1961 p 23) is extended to laminated plates of orthotropic material; theory is developed with assumption that plate is subjected to pure bending and that state of plane stress exists in each orthotropic lamina; therefore, normal and shear stresses on planes parallel to plane of plate are assumed zero; stiffness matrix is found and experimental results are given; orthotropic flexural rigidity of laminated plates as computed provides useful design tool; application to material such as wood is limited only by inconsistent or discontinuous material properties; method is most suitable for design with high quality plywood.
