Programmed sampling and testing of river estuary in Thailand, where water temperature averages 30 C during periods of low flow, indicates strong oxygen demand for nitrification and in turn reservoir of oxygen from nitrates to prevent anaerobic conditions downstream; with tidal movement of 40 km (30 mi). net downstream travel at 7 km to 10 km/day and 6+ days of detention in estuary, bacteria Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter nitrify continuous supply of ammonia to nitrates; this requires modifications in determinations of BOD and modifications of parameters and equations defining dissolved oxygen concentrations for use on tropical estuaries.
