Surface shaft plumbs depths to buried tunnel
By means of delicate, pinpoint boring operation, severe water conditions were successfully overcome in drilling vertical shaft through 115 ft of earth and rock into crown of existing tunnel; equipment used to penetrate tunnel without fracturing it and inundating it with muck-filled water included hollow Kelly bar circulating air to lift cuttings out of hole, and special "shoe" precast in casing to place grout.
