Development and use of precast concrete tunnel linings in Great Britain are reviewed; use of boltless plain concrete linings which can be expanded directly against ground or assembled on former and grouted into oversize excavation; principles of structural design of segmental linings of plain concrete are discussed in light of studies of their performance in tunnel; differences in bending characteristics of cast-iron, reinforced concrete and plain concrete segments are shown by laboratory tests.
