Scheme first planned 30 years ago nears completion
Design particulars and construction techniques of tunnel under River Tyne, Great Britain, which is furthest downstream and first tunnel for vehicular use; road tunnel has 31 ft 3 in. ID and is 5500 ft long descending at gradient of one in 20 to maximum depth 100 ft beneath river and almost immediately rising again at same gradient; tunnel is lined with cast iron segments bolted together and calked with strip capable of keeping out water at 45 psi; ventilation is on system of upward semitransverse; feature of ventilating equipment is use of movable fans; service and standby fan is mounted on rails.
