Novel techniques used by French contractors in placing tunnel elements for roadway under Vieux-Port harbor of Marseille; temporary gantries supporting four 5-ton winches were fitted at each end of floating element before it was towed into position; cables were then lowered from gantries into water and anchored to concrete pile blocks; elements were then winched down to their beds against natural forces of flotation to provide more control over element.
