Stress concentration in strain-gradient bodies
Analytical solution is presented to boundary-value problem in linear elasticity in which potential energy depends on strains and strain gradients; problem considered is that of infinite medium, containing spherical cavity, subjected to uniaxial tension at infinity; for isotropic, centrosymmetric material, strain-gradient theory contains five additional micro-constants which may be related to Lame' constants by means of two material lengths; range of micro-constants is determined on basis of positive definiteness of potential energy and under this condition no difficulty is encountered in reducing strain-gradient solution to either couple-stress or classical solution.
