Review of technique of lighting highways from lanterns mounted on high masts; advantages of this system are discussed; requirements of lanterns are reviewed, their optical characteristics are illustrated and merits of various light sources are considered; design of mast in common use is described; method of planning high-mast lighting scheme is set out and mention is made of other applications for this new lighting system.
