Direct shear tests at variable volume and at constant volume
Automatic machine for direct shear tests built in Switzerland according to H.M.O'Neil's principles (1962) is described; in tests at variable volume, normal stress is maintained constant, changes in volume and shear strength being registered as function of relative displacement; in tests at constant volume, normal stresses and shear strength are registered as function of relative displacement; results of tests carried out on sand clay by means of both methods are shown in diagrams and discussed.
