Volume changes in triaxial and plane strain tests
Volume changes occurring in packings of rigid spheres during deformation under both triaxial and plane strain conditions are analyzed theoretically; it is shown that smaller volume changes occur under plane strain conditions for equal axial strain; experimental data indicate that result holds true for real soils; relevance of result to study of soil strength under high confining pressures is discussed.
