Attempt is made to express analytically stress-strain relations existing during shear box test; in view of incomplete definition of state of stress, analysis has to be based on certain assumptions; their appropriateness is shown by comparison between analytically computed and experimentally measured values; shear box tests were carried out with undisturbed loess samples; generality of conclusions is made possible by results of shear box tests with sand.
