Strength measurements on stiff fissured Barton clay from Fawley (Hampshire)
Barton clay is stiff overconsolidated clay deposited late in Eocene Epoch; detailed investigations at Fawley, Southampton, showed that clay in this locality was highly fissured and behaved more like shattered rock than clay; field and laboratory measurements showed that strength of fissured clay was considerably less than lumps of stiff clay between fissures but appreciably higher than residual shear strength measured in laboratory; strength of particular specimen depends upon relative sizes of specimen and fissure spacing, inclination of fissure with respect to plane of maximum shear stress, roughness of fissure surface and continuity of fissures.
