Principal axes observed during simple shear of sand
Latest model of simple shear apparatus and its use for determining magnitudes and directions of principal stresses and strains, as well as of their increments, throughout tests on soils or similar granular media is described; significance of directions of these axes in current hypotheses of stress-strain behavior of soils and their application in design problems is discussed; illustrative data from tests on sand are presented which confirm that up to peak stress conditions principal axes of stress and of strain-increment coincide.
