Free degradation of London Clay cliffs
Morphological evidence concerning degradation of London Clay cliffs following cessation of erosion at foot is drawn from sites in Essex and Kent; stages of free degradation on coastal cliffs are traced until angle of ultimate stability against landsliding is reached; this angle is shown to be closely anticipated, at early stage of degradation process, in average inclination of accumulation zone which develops at slope foot; landslides on more mature, inland slopes are generally of different type, probably because these slopes are commonly mantled by solidification deposits.
