Field measurements of in situ stresses in quick clays
Many aspects of shear-strength behavior of natural quick clays are dependent on relative magnitude of in-situ principal effective stresses; apparatus to measure horizontal stresses, and that consisted of large open pipe instrumented with earth-pressure and water-pressure gages was constructed and installed at three different sites in such way that pipe did not displace clay outwards from pipe; maximum value of ratio between horizontal and vertical effective stresses was K equal to about 0.65; disturbance of clay in contact with pipe influenced magnitudes of measured earth pressures.
