Detrimental effect of expansive clay on structures is due to excessive pressure generated by it; magnitude of this pressure is dependent on many factors, two of which are discussed; effect of allowable volume change on vertical and lateral pressure is analyzed from viewpoint of its applicability to engineering problems; coefficient of earth pressure at rest usually exceeds unity; this should be considered in proper perspective and utilized with caution; on treatment of expansive clay with electrolyte solutions, both swelling and swelling pressure are affected; proper choice of electrolyte would render swelling pressure tolerable.
