Extensive irrigation developments constructed centuries ago have been discovered and are now being restored; history of irrigation since fourth century B.C.; data on outlet works, gates of which were elephant powered; most impressive is 1600-yr old Elahera Canal, continuous waterway 85 mi long; culverts which permitted irrigation water to be distributed to fields were built of cut rock.
