Strengthening operation carried out on 100-vr old 9-arch viaduct; main brick arch spans are sound, but five spandril arches supporting chalk filling and ballasted track have become weak and are being demolished; to avoid extra weight at height of up to 65 ft above ground, spandril cavities were filled with light weight concrete, 9-in. reinforced concrete slab placed immediately below track level, and tracks lowered up to 2 ft. (see also Engineer v 190 Dec 8 1950 p 569)
