Spanish lakes tapped for hydroelectric development
Engineering work in connection with construction of tunnels for increased storage of lake waters in mountains of Catalona; tunnels were driven through granite with numerous faults, which had to be treated with cement injections to reduce inflow from icy water jets; tunnel system, by lowering overflow level of three lakes, supplied reserve of water in dry years for hydroelectric stations owned by Catalona Electrical Union; works were executed at altitude of 1100 m. during winter snows, when only transport possible was on backs of men. See brief translated abstract in Water and Water Eng., vol. 29, no. 346, Oct. 20, 1927, p. 426.
