38 designs were submitted, upon invitation, by 11 prominent German firms; of these 9 were considered in final competition and award made to F. Krup A.G.; features of winning design: single, shore-to-shore span, 333.2 m. long; two-hinged, solid, crescent-shaped arch ribs; superstructure of high-grade steel which may be stressed to 1800 kg. per sq.m.; estimated cost about 13 million marks; winning and other 8 designs, including plate-girder, steel arch and suspension types, with and without mid-river piers, are described in considerable detail, illustrating some of the most novel features of German bridge practice.
