Pier subsidence wrecks concrete arch bridge in rumania
Large concrete-arch bridge on main railway line was wrecked in 1926 by subsidence of one of its river piers; bridge, built 5 years ago, crosses Milcov River near Foscani; consists of 3 spans of 30 m., having reinforced barrel arches; just previous to wrecking rain of cloudburst intensity, lasting 18 hr., had fallen over drainage area; unprecedented flood discharge resulted; result was that river bed scoured heavily at railway bridge, evidently undermining one of river piers; pier settled about 4 ft.; settlement, in turn, resulted in fracture of adjacent arches.
