Operation of automatic trench shoring machine that propels itself forward with self-contained jacks in sewer line excavation is described; mobile shorer forestalls earth slides and safeguards men working in excavation; machine advances hydraulically, jacking forward to straddle and travel over length of newly-placed pipe; each forward move by shorer leaves segment of pipe strung behind it; backfill, dumped over pipe to machine's rear, provides shorer with push-off base for its jacks.
