Roof construction of Victor Hugo Sports Arena in Bordeaux (France)
Ovoidal in-plan suspension roof of 66 m span along major axis consists of combination of radial and parallel cables (system Jawerth); horizontal forces are taken up by two horse-shoe-shaped concrete rings (of 25 m and 22 m radii, respectively), fixed to opposite semicircular walls; in building center these forces are anchored to two steel semicircles held together by endless cables running around them; construction was assembled on ground, lifted, and then prestressed by means of hydraulic presses; roof is covered with zinc plated, plastic-coated, corrugated sheets and provided with 90 plastic skylights.
