Triaxial compression tests were undertaken on rock specimens of suite of argillaceous rocks (slate, fireclay, shale and siltstone) oriented with respect to their planar anisotropy; aim of present investigation was mainly to study failure criteria of these rocks under different confining pressures, having regard to their anisotropic nature; with increase in confining pressure, errors become progressively less important because type of failure approaches that of pure shear fracture.
