Rock fracture spacings, openings and porosities
Method for determining fracture porosity resulting from presence of openings produced by breaking or shattering of otherwise less pervious rock from permeability measurements in drill holes; it applies only to rocks in which intergranular permeability is very small compared to fracture permeability measured by field tests of large rock masses; studies of water pressure-test results from 35 dam sites indicate that maximum fracture porosities are about 0.05% near surface, decreasing to about 0.005% at 200-ft depth; fracture openings decrease to about 100 to 50 μ in same depth interval; minimum spacing of open fractures increases from 4 to 14 ft.
