Paving across state line calls for flexibility
Construction of interstate highway at Michigan-Indiana line includes only common width of 24 ft; pavements have major differences in thickness, crown and finish; spacing of contraction joints, thickness of subbase, width and thickness of shoulder surfacing, and width of median; there also are marked differences in materials used in subbases and shoulder surfaces; these differences caused paving train to readjust operations for half of working day to reset finishing machines to meet crown requirements, and change side forms for reinforced pavements, since Michigan uses 9-in. slab, while Indiana's is 10 in.; cross sections are given of reinforced slabs in Indiana and in Michigan.
