Materials and methods for future -- Use of rigid foam plastics in highways
Examples of utilization of plastic foam for attenuating freezing of frost susceptible subgrade soils; results of tests with flexible and rigid pavements having styrofoam 30 in. below pavement surface; installation to repair frost heave was made in Minnesota in 1962 using 2 in. Styrofoam insulation, and performance to date indicates there was no freezing in subgrade during 1500 degree-day winter of 1963-64; initial results are very favorable and indicate that treatment of culverts and protection of frost-susceptible soils in zone of frost penetration have most potential at this time.
