Hydraulic operation of Lower Rhone schemes
Compagnie Nationale du Rhone have operated for several years series of four schemes spread over 100 km of Lower Rhone; they are all situated in densely populated region; river is subject to high and sudden floods, and capacity of various reservoirs is inadequate compared with discharge to be evacuated; study of models showed way in which floods were propagated in Rhone in its original state and modifications introduced by building schemes; preventive measures are coordinated by central organism which draws up permanent discharge forecasts and follows developments along series of schemes.
