Earth pressure exerted on vertical retaining wall by concentrated load applied to backfill
Value and point of application of horizontal component to pressure exerted on noncohesive horizontal backfill by linear load distributed along strip parallel to back of retaining wall were determined experimentally and formulated in terms of tangent of slip prism angle and ratio of distance d between strip axis and wall, and latter's height h; it is shown that same law applies to point load acting at distance d from wall; law is extended to uniformly distributed load and compared with formulas by Terzaghi and Boussinesq.
