Bulkhead tied back to soft soil
Prestressed concrete tiebacks anchored in soil, support retaining wall for foundation excavation of 52-story Bank of America building, San Francisco, Calif; excavation drops 40 to 60 ft below street level; soldier beams were formed by two back-to-back structural steel channels placed 13 in. apart in vertical holes, which were filled with lean concrete; tiebacks consist of 7/8-in. to 1 1/4-in. diam high-strength steel rod in grouted holes reaching back into street areas beyond theoretical slip plane, which was assumed to extend at 60° angle from horizontal from bottom of soldier beams.
