Outside storage of Pinus Radiata wood chips in New Zealand
Winter and summer storage piles of chips were examined for rate of colonization by fungi and extent to which associated mold, stain, and decay developed with time; effect of resultant biological deterioration on pulp yield and quality were also studied; differences in microclimates of piles were reflected on type and distribution of decay; physical properties of pulps made from chips 6 mo in storage were unchanged, except for tear factor, which was slightly reduced; in both piles, storage longer than 6 mo led to marked reductions in tear; after 1 yr, yield and brightness were slightly lowered.
