Grid-type footings support California state capitol extension
In construction of steel structure covered with concrete, grid type footing was used to minimize settlement in underlying clayey silt; continuous concrete footing approximately 6 ft wide and 3 ft deep extends between columns; column spacing of 25 ft, governed by garage requirements, necessitated use of light weight concrete; girders were made continuous over columns thus making savings in steel possible.
